How To Refinish Hardwood Floors

When it comes to refinishing hardwood floors, here's a few key things we do at Tucson Wood Refinishing. We strongly encourage you to hire a professional as DIY processes might make a mistake.

The first step in our process is always to study the existing hardwoods. Knowing the grain, finish, style and current layout of a home is critical in creating a plan for refinishing or resurfacing the floors. Without a plan, you're working blind in our opinion. We then go around hammering down any nails that have protruded over time and clean the floors with a vacuum and mop.

Obviously since we've been in the industry for years, we've acquired all necessary sanders and finishers to handle this job. But you would need a walk-behind sander (aka drum-sander), solid wood sanding machine, hand sanders and sandpaper to start. You'll also need finishing cloths and a squeegee mop in some circumstances for the finish.  Not to mention little things like dust masks, rags and pads.

Refinishing wood floors is as much an art as a science. We always start by removing baseboards throughout the area to protect them. It's knowing when and how long to hold the sander on each different area (and each different floor finish). Mess up too much and you could be looking at a mistake costing you thousands. Be patient with the sander and remove all existing wax or finish coat before moving on. Don't forget to vacuum up all dust because that won't work well with the new stain and finish.

This method is considered more "heavy duty" for a floor makeover. It involves deeper sanding to fully remove scratches, scrapes, dents and more. In heavily trafficked areas, we often recommend this method due to the amount of imperfections we find. If necessary, we will reinforce some wood planks that have shifted to ensure a clean finish at the end. After the sanding, we ensure a proper leveling is completed on the floors. Next, we clean the floors and prep them for the new stain color you choose and polyurethane sealing coat to protect them.

Resurfacing is considered more of a "light duty" makeover on the floors. It doesn't handle as many imperfections so we often recommend this for lighter trafficked areas with few scratches. Resurfacing is simple in that we only remove the top-most surface layer of sealant and wood floor (a light sanding) and reapply new stain and sealing at the end. This is a great option if your floors are in good condition and you'd like a new color. It's often more cost effective too because it's faster and requires less detail on the sanding side.
